Across the US, wood products store nearly three billion metric tonnes of carbon in products in use and in solid waste disposal sites, accounting for nearly 5% of carbon stored in all forest land and harvested wood pools. Wood products continue to store carbon after being processed into different uses, with longevities ranging from a few years (e.g., paper) to many decades (e.g., lumber or oriented strandboard). This presentation provides a background on harvested wood products from a carbon perspective, highlighting the role that wood durability and longevity play in understanding how different wood product types contribute to carbon storage.
